If you’ve used a smartphone that suggests words as you type, let your Nest thermostat learn from your comings and goings, or asked a virtual assistant like Siri or Alexa a question, you’ve already interacted with AI. If you’re new to AI and want to learn how to use it, here are a few ways to get started using it at work:

start small with everyday tools Start Small with Everyday Tools

Begin by using AI in the tools you already have. Many apps, like your email or word processor, have AI features built in. For example, when you type an email, the software you use might suggest ways to finish your sentences. Another way to start is by using voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant to set reminders or ask questions.

Start with AI Powered Apps Explore AI-Powered Apps

There are many free or low-cost apps that use AI to make life easier. For example, apps like Grammarly can help improve your writing by suggesting better words or fixing grammar mistakes. AI-based translation apps including Google Translate can help you understand different languages, keeping in mind they make mistakes and may not accurately reflect formality, regional or country differences in language.

Back to Basics Learn the Basics

To feel more confident using AI, it helps to understand the basics of how it works. There are many online resources, such as YouTube videos, articles, and beginner-friendly courses, that explain AI in simple terms. Learning a little about AI can make you more comfortable with the technology and help you discover new ways to use it.

Ask for Help Ask for Help

If you’re unsure about using AI, ask a TCU student for help! Students increasingly use AI tools like notetaking apps (there are many), Canva Magic Design, and ChatGPT or AI Tutor Chat for academic assistance. There are also online communities to tap for tutorials that guide you step-by-step through using different AI tools.

Practice Makes Progress Practice and Explore

The best way to get comfortable with AI is to practice using it. The more you experiment with AI tools, the more you’ll see how they can make tasks easier and more efficient. Don’t be afraid to try new things and explore different AI applications to find out what works best for you. LinkedIn Learning adds new lessons weekly and has an AI Career Coach tool that’s easy to play around with.

Getting started with AI is relatively easy. Starting with everyday tools, exploring AI-powered apps, and learning a bit about how AI works can help with becoming comfortable using this technology in daily life.
